Green Hassig Asks St. Lawrence County Legislature to Make 3 New Laws

Monday, March 3, 2014, 7:00 PM

Legislative Board Room, St. Lawrence County Courthouse, Canton, NY USA

The county legislatures of NY-21 and all other county legislative bodies in New York State have a great deal of power to bring change.  New York is a Home Rule state.  This means that local governments can adopt legislation that stands alone without the need for any supporting legislation on the state or federal level. In cases where there are related state and federal laws, if the local law is more stringent, it stands.

There are 3 new laws that I want St. Lawrence County government to set in place.  These laws will change things for the better.  Without these laws, life in St, Lawrence County and the rest of our country will continue to become worse.

(1) A prohibition against the sale and consumption of fracked gas in St. Lawrence County

Fracking is a technology that causes serious and irreparable harm to the Earth.  Fracking contaminates water, air and land.  Fracking will not continue if people can’t buy and burn fracked gas.  The county legislature can help with bringing an end to fracking by prohibiting the sale and consumption of fracked gas in St. Lawrence County.

(2) Establish public financing for all local election campaigns

Publicly financed election campaigns in which it is illegal to spend any money other than what is provided by law would go far to eliminating corporate money and influence in local government.  With publicly financed election campaigns the field of candidates would expand beyond those who have sufficient wealth to mount their own campaigns and the candidates of major parties, which now fund much of campaign spending.  Political parties should not be able to buy elections by outspending their competition.  Public financing of election campaigns will bring better candidates into public office.

(3) Require the St. Lawrence County Public Health Department to provide residents with information on all known and suspected human carcinogens

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) publish lists of carcinogens that are classified for human carcinogenicity.  Many chemicals are now classified as known or suspected human carcinogens.  Dioxins, PCBs, hexachlorobenzene, benzene, formaldehyde, arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium and mercury are among the chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer in humans.  With knowledge of these chemicals comes the ability to avoid exposure and thereby minimize cancer risk.  The St. Lawrence County Public Health Department is not providing this information now because it depends upon the New York State Department of Health (DOH) for cancer information and the DOH is controlled by corporate influences that oppose informing the public on the subject of chemical exposure cancer causation.  This is wrong.  Lack of information is causing people in St. Lawrence County to get cancer and die.  We can change this by enacting a county law that requires public education on chemical carcinogens.

Green Party Candidate Hassig Steps Up Love of the Earth Revolution on Shale Gas

Monday, November 25, 2013, 3:00 PM

Enbridge St. Lawrence Gas Office, 33 Stearns Street, Massena, NY USA

High volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF) or fracking is a heavily
polluting activity.  Tremendous quantities of untested chemicals are
injected into the Earth along with water and sand to shatter shale
formations thereby releasing natural gas from pockets within the rock.
This process leads to contamination of ground water and surface water
via mingling of fracking fluid, chemicals present in the shale pockets
and water.  Fracking a gas well involves a very large amount of truck
traffic.  The diesel exhaust emissions from this trucking onslaught
are a major impact upon air quality.  Additional contamination of air
occurs via evaporation from condensate tanks and waste pits.  The
heavy contamination of water and air resulting from fracking is
harmful to all living beings.  There has been far too much harm to
life on Earth from petrochemical corporations already.  Fracking is
unacceptable.

Enbridge Corporation is transporting and marketing natural gas that is
extracted by fracking.  This company that profits from fracking has a
responsibility to participate in dialogue concerning the pollution
associated with fracking for gas.  I will endeavor to engage Enbridge
Corporation in that dialogue.  Going to the Massena Enbridge St. Lawrence Gas
Office is a perfect way to start the talk on fracking pollution.  This
office is part of my home region.  It is within the home region that
matters of health and environmental protection should be discussed
most extensively.  Where we live is where our words have the most
power.

I visit the Enbridge Office in the name of love, love of the Earth and
all of the living beings of the Earth.  I believe that love is the
most powerful force that can be brought to bear for protecting the
Earth Mother.  Love of the Earth and her many children will bring an
end to fracking.  This is a beautiful, non-violent, environmental
Revolution.  As we move forward with acting upon our love of the Earth
and all of her children, we create the great changes that will soon
eliminate pollution, cancer, greed and arrogance.

Green Party Candidate Hassig Endeavors to Initiate Dialogue with

NY-21 Green Party Candidate Hassig Visits Potsdam College to Speak on
Free Education and Safe Chemical Use

Tuesday, September 17, 2013, 2:30 PM

Plaza South of Barrington Student Union

Potsdam, New York USA

As a Green Party congressional candidate, it is important to bring
forward new proposals that are of benefit to the electorate. Free
education through graduate school and safe chemical use are two such
ideas.

American youth should have the opportunity to learn free from the
repressive burden of high education costs. Operating a motor vehicle
and obtaining housing impose a considerable demand upon a student’s
finances. Free college tuition can help make education more
affordable for all. It is reasonable and good that our society would
use its wealth to make intellectual growth a reality for large numbers
of young people. This is one of the best investments that we can
make.

Safe chemical use will usher in a new era of environmental restoration
and improved health. The best way to begin using chemicals safely is
to recognize the harm that has been caused by unsafe chemical use. I
propose to create thousands of new jobs in the field of environmental
health education. There should be one environmental health educator
for every one hundred Americans. Educating on past unsafe chemical
use and strategies for transitioning to safe chemical use is of such
critical importance to our future that such a favorable educational
ratio is well warranted.

It is with new ideas that we will enter into a New Age of happiness
and well being. Government can take a leading role in making new
ideas reality. Government can foster change. Good government can
help make things better. Let’s get started.

Hassig Announces 2014 Green Party Run in NY-21

Friday, September 6, 2013, 1:00 PM

Clock Tower Plaza, Jefferson Community College

Watertown, New York USA

During my 2012 NY-21 campaign, I repeatedly promised to run until I
won.  Perseverance is a key element of success.  It is with great
excitement and joy that I enter the 2014 race.  This will be a
campaign highlighted by love, creativity and beauty.  I will be a
member of the US House of Representatives someday soon.

Our Earth Mother is ever so much in need of relief from the human
onslaughts of careless chemical use, over population, habitat
destruction and fossil fuel combustion.  I will campaign so as to show
good leadership in loving the Earth and protecting the Earth.  My
campaign will emphasize how we must change everything to live in
harmony with fellow humans and the other living beings.

I have chosen Jefferson Community College (JCC) for the kick-off of my
campaign because of the large amount of positive energy that I
received from students in 2012.  It is my greatest hope that the
grassroots, good, solid people of America will take control of our
destiny by regaining control of federal government.  The students of
JCC, Canton College, Potsdam College and Plattsburgh College can make
great strides in establishing the control of the people over our
national government.  They can start by speaking freely about what
they want their government to be.  I want Congress to be free from
corporate control.  I will endeavor mightily to accomplish this.  I
can do a good job of freeing Congress if I am elected.  As the
students proceed with speaking freely about changing government, they
will sense the time is right for civil disobedience to pressure
government to break away from corporate control.  This is my dream for
a new America.  We will change everything as soon as we have taken
back our government.  A government that is acting for the betterment
of the lives of the vast majority of Americans will protect public
health and the Earth by ushering in the days of safe chemical use,
sustainable human reproduction, habitat protection and transition to
non-combustion energy sources, including solar and wind.  This is good
for the Earth and it is good for the people.  My campaign is all about
great change coming.  Viva the Revolution!

Ursula Rozum
2012 Green Party Candidate in 24th Congressional District Race
Syracuse, New York USA

Hi Ursula,

I focus much of my work as Director of Cancer Action NY on carcinogen
exposure minimization. Minimizing the release of carcinogens to the
environment is the most effective way to prevent cancer.

Syracuse has two major public hospitals and a public medical school.
These are places where the message of carcinogen exposure minimization
via environmental protection should be heard. I have been in
communication with Winthrop Thurlow, Esq. counsel to the State
University of New York Upstate Medical University. We have discussed
free speech on the campus. I will be exercising my free speech at
this venue during early September.

Would you be interested in joining forces to raise awareness on the
carcinogen releases associated with fracking? I would be most happy
to share the opportunity to engage in free speech on the Upstate
campus.

Thank you for your work on the Peace Council. The Whistleblower
protection event was well done.

Donald L. Hassig

“Genetic Roulette” Showing at Massena Public Library

Thursday, July 11, 2013, 6:00 PM

Massena Public Library, Massena, NY USA

Scientific research is beginning to establish the facts of how
consumption of genetically modified crops and consumption of milk
produced using genetically engineered bovine growth hormone are
causing damage to human and animal health.  “Genetic Roulette”
provides much insight into this critical health issue.  Now that
genetically modified corn and soybeans make up such a high percentage
of what is available for Americans to eat, it is time for evidence
based decision making about what to eat and what not to eat.

This event is sponsored by Cancer Action NY and the St. Lawrence River
Green Party.  For further information contact Donald Hassig at
